Earth is incredible!
Our world is a beautiful place that has supported all living things for millions of years. Although our presence has caused significant damage, we still have the opportunity to change it.
The wonderful thing that is happening today is that people are becoming more aware of our environment's needs and are demonstrating a willingness to make a change. When we talk about the environment, we mean everything around us, not just the weather. It includes all of the animals, plants, and humans who live on this planet.
Here are some fascinating environmental facts that you should be aware of.
Between 1970 and 2015, human consumption of Earth's natural resources more than tripled. Our use of natural resources is expected to increase and more than double between 2015 and 2050.
According to NASA, if the current rate of destruction continues, the world's rainforests will be gone by 2100.
If current trends continue, we will have depleted the world's oceans of seafood by the year 2050.
The consumer society is parched. I'm thirsty. "If we continue as we are, there will be no water by 2040." (Aarhus University, Denmark) Professor Benjamin Sovacool.
Today's global population is 215,000 people higher than it was yesterday.
If all life on Earth were weighed, the human population would account for only about one-tenth of the total weight of life on Earth.
By 2100, the global urban population will generate three times as much waste as it does today.
Every day, 27,000 trees are cut down to make toilet paper.
Aluminum is a material that can be recycled indefinitely. Recycling one aluminum can save enough energy to power our televisions for at least three hours. Every year, humans consume 80 trillion aluminum cans.
American corporations alone use enough paper to encircle the Earth three times! (It is a good thing that businesses are going paperless.)
We could save 75,000 trees simply by recycling the paper used in the daily run of the New York Times.
Throwing plastic bags and other plastic materials into the ocean kills up to 1 million sea creatures each year.
A glass bottle made today will take over 4,000 years to decompose.
Only 1% of the world's water supply can be used. For the time being, 97 percent is ocean water and 2 percent is frozen solid in the Arctic.
Every year, our planet gains 77 million new residents.
Every year, an estimated 50,000 species in our tropical forests become extinct. That's 137 species per day on average.
Rainforests are being harvested at a rate of 100 acres per minute.
The oldest trees on the planet are over 4,600 years old.
Landfills are made up of 35% packaging materials.
Thanks!!
